How about this one: House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros... That is the book our story "My Name" came from!
Here's another title you might recognize... The author is S.E. Hinton, it's about a gang of young boys called "greasers," sound familiar?! That's right! The Outsiders is on the list!
This list could go on and on, but all of the titles above have been challenged by people who want to ban them.
In 100 words or more tell me if you have read any of the above books or the books on the list (go to the link!). Why do you think that they have come under attack? What do you think are some common reasons why books might be challenged? Why do people object to books and try to have them banned? Are there any books from which students should be sheltered? What do you think about banning books?
(Please try to answer as many of these questions as you can, even if you have not read anything on the list.)
*Also, just for fun, I will print the list of challenged books and highlight the ones we have in our classroom library! Just in case you feel like a rebel! ;)
