We are getting closer to your student led conference (SLC) on January 28th or 29th. During your SLC, you'll be reviewing some of your schoolwork over the last ten weeks with a parent/guardian. For this week's blog post, let me know what your thoughts are about student led conferences. Do you think they're a good idea? Why/Why not? What are your biggest concerns regarding your SLC? What are you looking forward to the most? What do you wish you could improve about the way we're going to be doing these conferences? If you could pick what goes into your binder, what would you include (could be from any class) and why? What would you leave out and why? What do you think your binder will show your parent/guardian about you as a student?
Your response does not need to address ALL of these questions, but it should be at least 100 words in length. Happy blogging!

I think student led conferences is a great idea because it lets your parents see your grades and get to see what you've been doing so far this year. I think that doing student led conferences is a cool experience because you get to have a meeting with your parents instead of a teacher and you get to present you work and grades for your parents. I also am a little nervous about SLC because I hope I don't forget what to say in front of my parents. I think it will be easy for me to do SLC because we got to fill out our red binders and I will be able to show all the work that I did. I'm actually looking forward to student led conferences. Yours truly, Sam Burton

I'm excited for student led conferences. I am mostly excited to show my parents all of the work I did. I think they will be the most proud of the grades I got on my Math, and Spanish tests and quizzes because those subjects are my two best ones! In my opinion, student led conferences are a good idea because you get to show your parents all of the work you did. Also, you get to share your goals and subjects you need to higher your grade in. The subjects I need to higher my grade in are Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. All of my goals are in those classes. In Language Arts, my goal is to improve my writing pieces by adding more details. My goal in Science is to pay attention a lot more. Lastly in Social Studies, my goal is to do a lot better on tests and pay attention more. Some of my goals I need to work on a little more like paying attention in Science. Overall, I'm looking forward to sharing my goals, and work to my parents.

I think student led conferences are not good.It would be very awkward when you show your parents a test with a bad grade on it and taking time out of friday to get everything you've done in the week wastes time so that makes more homework and why do this when your parents can check your tests and grades online. That is why I think student led conferences are pointless , people are just wasting time and effort on it. It would be easier just to have students show everything on sisweb and tell there parents what they did today.

I believe that our student led conferences are important because they will show our parents what we have been learning throughout this marking period. I do not have any concerns for the conference, but I do see an issue with this setup. The thing that I would want to change about the conferences is to hold them after school or on the weekend instead of during school. Sometimes it is hard to make up the work for classes, and I would rather have the conferences at a different time. Also, if I could choose what was displayed in the binder, I would choose all projects, essays, tests, and quizzes to show the most weighted work from the quarter. I would exclude any homework or unimportant classwork because they do not count towards our grade as much as projects and tests. Overall, I do not mind holding a student led conference, and I am sure that my parents will appreciate seeing all of the things that we have completed this marking period.

i think the the SLC are a bad idea. for one reason, the report cards are qa hole week old by the time that we show them to our parents. you could have a bad grade on a test or quiz and you get a really good grade on the need test or quiz and now you have a good score, we need to use sis web instead of using paper to show week old grades. another is, most peoples parents look on sis web anyway so they are a bad waste of time to make a conference in the middle of your class that your parents don't care about. we need a sorting hat that said if you have shown your parents your report card... yea we should get that. =3 but anyhow i do not think that they are a good idea. besides- i don't like it when people hover over me its like... i can't do it when you are standing right there!!! i do not think that they are nessisary.

I feel that the student led conferences are a good idea. I feel this way because I could show off my grades to my parents and i could have my parents help me with my not so good grades. The one thing i don't like about student led conferences are that we have no control over what we can put into our binders. I think that we should have a minimum of 3 things we could put into each section and we choose what we want to put in it but the teachers can put what they want in it also. in conclusion, i think that student led conferences are a great idea and JDMS should continue to do it for not just 7th grade but all grades.

I think Student Led Conferences are a good idea. I think they are a smart idea because some students’ parents might be working a lot so they may not have the chance to talk to them about school and this is the perfect opportunity for them to do so. My biggest concerns regarding my SLC is having to show my parents a grade I’m not proud of. I want the SLC to be fun. I’m looking forward to showing off my good grades to them the most. Every student feels good about having their parents be proud of them. Something I would like to improve about the way these are done though is I think we shouldn’t have to share everything that the teachers say to put in the binder. I think we should pick out the things we want to share with our parents that we think would give them an idea of what we are learning in school but the teacher would approve what we chose to make sure we have enough. If I could choose what do put in my binder I would choose mostly E.L.A because that is my favorite subject by far. It almost always has been. I would include some math too because it’s also a subject I do well in and I’ve never minded it that much. I would leave out Social Studies and Science because those are my least favorite subjects and I would rather not talk about them. I think my binder will show my parents that I am a pretty good student in school. I’m not a perfect student but no student is.

I think that the Student Led Conference is a great way to show our parents what we've been working on these last ten weeks. I am excited to show my parents myself what i have done well and what i have done not as well on. I think it will also help because my parents and I will be able to set goals for the 3rd quarter and discuss what i need to improve on. Overall i think Student Led Conferences will be a great idea for myself and my parents.

I think that the student led conferences are a good ideas for some people and not useful for others. For me it isn’t useful because my parents always see my grades and I always tell them about quizzes and important grades I am getting. I don’t have any concerns except for what happens if you are busy the nights you have to go. On both 28th and 29th I am busy but I can most likely cancel whatever it is but some people might not be able to. If so, what do they do? I think that some people should have to do the SLC and some others don’t. I think that the binder is a good idea and it will show the increase or not in school grades.

I think the Student Led Conferences are a great idea to show parents what you do in school and how much effort you put into your work. The report cards just show grades and not what you actually do in school. I think it also is good for the parents because it's kind of awkward when you are talking with your child's teacher because you don't really know them as a person, just as your child's teacher. In Student Led Conferences you talk with your child and it is just less awkward than talking with a teacher. I think my parents will see my range of grades from really good to not so good. If i could put anything in there I would put mostly good grades but some bad ones to because I wouldn't want my parents to see all my good grades and no bad ones , that would lead them to think I never got a bad grade. I think that the Student Led Conferences are a great thing for the students and parents because it lets our parents know how we are doing in school.

I do not think SLC is a good idea because why have your parents come during the school day when you can just bring your work home? If I had to pick what goes into my binder, I would choose all my recent tests from SS because they have the best grades. My biggest concern is that I might not impress my parents with my work.

I can’t say whether student led conferences are a good idea, they have both pros and cons. One of the pros is that you can show what work you are doing and how hard 7th grade really is. Also, it increases the student’s focus in school, because they are showing their work to their parents. Furthermore, it give a time for the student and the parent to talk without any distractions. However, there are cons too. The biggest one is that you can’t pick what goes in your binder. If you did great on most assignments, and poorly on a few, there is a chance that the poor ones will go in your binder, but only a few good ones. I wish that, as a student, you could pick a maximum of four more things to go in your binder. I don’t know if thirty minutes will be enough time or not enough time, but to me, it seems like almost a whole period is a lot of time. I am getting more anxious as the student led conference gets closer, and now I’m really nervous. Still, I think that it will turn out well.

I think student let conferences are a waste of time and energy. I think this way because it is so much easier to just bring home a report card and be honest with your parents about your grades and just try hard to get good grades. If I could pick what would go in my binder, I would pick it to be mostly science and math materials. I would choose this because these two subjects are my best subjects and I perform really well in them. If I could leave out things in my SLC binder, it would probably be ELA related because I don't do very well in ELA. Personally, I don't think that showing my parents my SLC binder will accomplish anything because like I said, it is a waste of time and energy and the staff and students would be so much better off without it.

I think that Student LED conferences are an O.K. idea. I’m not looking forward to it, but I’m not dreading it. I think that they are a good idea for people who don’t always show their parents their grades, but I usually tell my parents how I did on a test, or quiz. I think that instead of this, we could just have to go through sis web with your parents about once a month for homework and have a slip of paper signed by your parents to show that you did it. If we couldn’t do it like that, I think that we should just have the red binders replaced with files on the computer so we could find off grades more easily.

I like the idea of SLC because I get to share with my parents what I actually do in school. I am a little nervous though, I already hate it when I get a bad grade, but now I feel even more pressured. Still I am excited, if I do finish the marking period as strong as I came in and improve even more my parents will be proud of me. Also i get to tell them about school, how I feel about it and other specific subjects, its not just my teachers telling my parents a bunch of grade numbers and showing them some of my papers. That is how I feel about SLC, a little bit nervous, but mostly excited.

You make a great point here, Murphy. Sitting down with teachers for a conference is much different than talking to the student about his/her experiences in school. Hopefully your SLC will go well and you'll find it productive in the end. Thanks!

I don't think SLC are a good idea. A SLC might make kids really nervous to show their parents all their school work. If I could choose what went in my DOC binder would make me feel better about showing my parents my grades and homework. If I could choose what went in the binder I would choose the tests and homework I have good grades.

I think that student led conferences are a bad idea. People might say stuff like "I think they allow us to communicate," but no actually likes talking to heir parents about school. Come on, when you get home from school all anyone says to "How was school?" is "Fine." If I could change one thing it would probably be that we could chose what assignments to show in addition to the ones we have to, to make sure we didn't just get unlucky on an important one. One good thing about this is that you can explain from your view why you got a certain bad grade, or didn't so so well on something.

I think student led confrences are a good idea because you could explain why you got the grade you got and thats different than the teacher guessing why you got the grade I am looking forwards to showing my parants the good grades I got. if I could pick what goes into my binder it would be all the good grades I have gotten this year. my biggest concern is if a bad grade got put in my binder my parants will get mad at me if I could leave anything out it would be any bad grades I have gotten I think my student led confrence will show my parants i am doing good in school

I like the idea of student led conferences because I think that it is important for our parents to know what we are doing in school. I am a little nervous about what my parents will think of some of my grades. I want to make my parents proud which puts a little more stress on me. I am excited to see their reactions to my good grades and their reactions when they find out how much we do every week. I wish we could put less graded papers in our binders and more about what we do every day. I can't wait to see how my parents feel about my grades and how much we do every week. Overall I am very excited for student led conferences and I think that my parents will be proud of me.

I like the ideas of SLC because i will get to show my parents why i got the grade i got. Also i will get to show them all my hard work. One of the things i would change is the movie. I would make i newer video. i would also have the parents come in the 1st marking period and then set goals with them. Then later in the 4th marking period they would come back and we could show them all the progress we made over the year. i’m nervous thought too i just hope i dont do terrible so my parents won’t be mad at me.

I think we should have student led conferences. One reason why we should have them is so parents can see what we are doing in school. I am excited to show my parents my red binder. I want to hear their response to it. I also want to show my parents my test and quizzes. Two things I would like to have in the binder that aren't are a piece of art work and a test or project from Spanish. I also think that some assignments that I' have done really good on are not in the binder, but some things I didn't do well on are. I think the students should put good grades in our binder so parents can be proud of us. Lastly, I think we should improve the time we have instead of rushing all of this stuff into our binder. I also think we should do this at the end of the fourth marking period so that we can show them everything from the whole year.

I feels student led conferences were a ok... idea but needs some things to be changed. so basically there a bad idea. First of all the student led conferences may not be needed for all students some people struggle with some things some struggle with totally different things. Also the school does not have a clear idea of what happens at home some parents may care about the conferences some may think its cute and just go because they can but hopefully enough parents will have the right mind set when they go to the conferences for them to be worth wile . When in all your grades are yours most people should be responsible enough to show there parents why they got a bad grade and what's happening that's causing the bad grade. people shouldn't need to set appointments at school to ''force'' students to tell there grades. Even though in the end its healthy for people to do the conferences whether they need to or not.

Student led confreres I think are a good thing. They let your parents know what your grades are on tests if u don't show them. Something I wish I could include were everything I got a good grade on :P like all of my math tests and quizzes. Also homework because that's not hard. Something I would like to leave out are the bad grades like that first Vocab quiz in the morning 1st period. My biggest concern is that my parents will pleased with my Ela performance. It will show my parents that I am stronger in most subjects and not as strong in other.

I think that student led confrences are a great idea for getting parents involved in a child's work. Some children hide their bad grades from their parents because they are ashamed ,but if they tell their parents then they could get the extra help they deserve. I wish i could improve some test in all different classes because some are a lot better than others and I make stupid mistakes. My recent vocabulary quiz was the worst grade iv gotten. I am afraid that my dad wont be happy with my grades but my mom is always helpful so im looking forward to having my student led confrence. I wish we could have the student led confrences with what we wanted to put in our binders. If i could choose what to put in my binder I would put all of my tests and my free write pieces. I would leave out things like projects because they arent really important thought. I think my parents would see i am a hard worker that is trying my best.

Dear Mrs. Stillitano, i think slc's are made to help the student take a nervous feeling off them. I think they are supposed to be a "fun" way for kids to tell their parents how they are doing in school. For me it puts more of a nervous feeling on me and im not really sure how it helps at all. I dont like Slc's and i think we should stick with the parent teacher meetings
